David Graham House to be Demolished

davidgrahamhouse1.jpg

What we’re looking at right here is The David Graham House by Arthur Erickson built in 1963 that is bound to be demolished. To update you on the house before I burst into tears: Graham house is located in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The project was difficult as the characteristicss of the terrain were very demanding; it was build on a rock cliff dropping 12 meters. Westport Chair | 1905

westportchair.jpg

The Westport chair was designed in 1905 by Thomas Lee of Westport, New York, for his family. The design is simple: a tilted backboard, an inclined seat and wide arms. You don’t need much more to come up with what is probably the most comfortable wooden chair in the world. Flawless. Designs like that always make me think that, indeed, it’s all been done before.

Because of that, the city has a cool vibe to it and what is more – the trams are really quiet – very important. Many quarters of Freiburg were built by the standards of sustainability and for that we salute them.

Der Spiegel is reporting today about the new Social Houseing Award sponsored by The Bauhaus-Dessau Foundation. All young architects are encouraged to think about poverty and ”…build attractive homes for the poor”. The competition is called “Housing shortages: The minimum subsistence level housing of today.” Provocative? Yes.
