You Are Not Alone | Architorture

I’ve been following posts on the Architorture website for quite some time now and even though some of you might have seen it already, I’ll post it for the sake of those who haven’t. ”The footage will illustrate the range of emotions and process of this extremely intense period at the conclusion of an academic career.” It’s the same all over the world in every architecture/design school; so whenever you’re working late hours finishing things up in the studio or you’re just stoned from all the glue chemicals you’ve been inhaling, you are not alone my friend.

The Egg Chair Turns 50

eggchair.jpg

Arne Jacobsen designed the Egg chair for the Copenhagen Radisson SAS hotel in 1958. There are very little objects that leave you speechless and if there ever was a chair that did just that, it has to be this one. The design is 50 years old but will never be outdated. The inspiration for The Egg is said to be the Womb chair by Eero Saarinen, which is amazing, but it seems like Jacobsen added a little flow to his creation that makes it so easy on the eye. To commemorate the occasion, Fritz Hansen, the chair manufacturer, is introducing 999 limited edition Golden Egg chairs with a bronze foot. They will be available in selected stores from February 1st. Oh Egg… Someday I’ll get you and we’ll spin around all day.

Fujiya Ginzan | Kengo Kuma

kengokumafujiyaginzan.jpg

In 2004 Kengo Kuma undertook a project in Ginzan Onsen (hot springs) district of Yamagata on the request of the owners of a 350-year-old inn. The owner’s wife, Jeanie Fuji (US), a traditionaly trained okami (female innkeeper), went through strict training led by her mother-in-law about how she is to act, serve food and greet the guest old Japanese style in their traditional wooden inn. The building itself can not provide enough character (as a whole) for an inn so devoted staff is crucial. What happens too often in all projects really is the whole thing gets westernized. Everywhere around the world. Buildings lacking in character could all use a touch of loaclity. Fuji Atsushi (the owner) wrote: Nipponjin ni wa, Nihon ga Tarinai which translates to ”Japanese people are not Japanese enough”. ‘The inn has five beautiful private hotsprings baths including an open-air bath on the top floor.” Embracing their customs and history in this new age is very important to him so to top it all they serve fresh japanese food based on washoku (Japanese cusine).
