The Space of Silence | Shigeru Ban

the nomadic artek pavilion was first shown during milan design week 2007. the building named, ‘the space of silence’ was designed by architect shigeru ban in collaboration with artek and forestry company UPM. it showcases a unique material made from recycled paper and plastic. it will be on show at design miami from december 6-9, 2007. the first north american installation will feature one hundred used chairs designed by alvar aalto and is titled, ‘2nd cycle’. the stools have been reclaimed by artek from the over 8 million sold worldwide and given a new lease on life. the history of each chair is encoded in rfid/nfc tags, which can be read by visitors with mobile phones. the installation will open on december 6 with a special presentation on the art of recycling by artek creative director, tom dixon.
